Barrie.

Barrie wraps around the western end of Kempenfelt Bay — a 14.5-kilometre arm of Lake Simcoe that drops to 41.5 metres at its deepest, holding the lake's coldest year-round water. The city's signature outdoor experience is the Kempenfelt Bay shoreline itself: the Waterfront Heritage Trail runs roughly 6 km of paved path past Centennial Beach, Heritage Park, and the Spirit Catcher sculpture; the North Shore Trail carries an accessible 4-metre-wide crushed-stone corridor on a former rail bed along the bay's north side; and four lifeguarded beaches — Centennial, Johnson's, Tyndale, and Minet's Point — line the shore.
Inland, Ardagh Bluffs Natural Area covers 518 acres with over 17 km of trails inside city limits, and Sunnidale Park anchors the largest municipal park with the Wyman Jacques Arboretum. About an hour and a quarter from Toronto via the main north–south highway, the city sits within the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority's watershed jurisdiction.

Hiking
Ardagh Bluffs Natural Area covers 518 acres of protected forest in southwest Barrie with over 17 kilometres of earthen trails inside city limits — four main trail systems marked by coloured squares and a network of secondary loops, with parking at the Peggy Hill Team Community Centre. North of downtown, Sunnidale Park is the largest municipal park and houses the 15.5-acre Wyman Jacques Arboretum; trails connect west to the Sandy Hollow Buffer and Lampman Park. Beacon Glen Trails add four lookout points on a short steep loop above the bay, and the Nine Mile Portage Heritage Trail follows the historic First Nations and fur-trade portage route west out of downtown.

The Waterfront Heritage Trail carries roughly 6 km of 3-metre-wide asphalt along Kempenfelt Bay from White Oaks Road to Penetanguishene Road, threading 11 interpretive stations and connecting Centennial Beach, Heritage Park, the Spirit Catcher sculpture, and Allandale Station Park. The North Shore Trail extends about 3 km of accessible 4-metre crushed stone along the bay's north shore on a former rail corridor, with parking at Heritage Park and Johnson's Beach. Tyndale Park, Minet's Point, and Centennial Park anchor the eastern end of the chain.

Three urban cycling spines run through Barrie: the paved Waterfront Heritage Trail (roughly 6 km along Kempenfelt Bay), the crushed-stone North Shore Trail on the former rail bed (about 3 km in city), and the Trans Canada Trail, which is routed approximately 20 km through Barrie on a mix of parkland and roadways with Indigenous interpretive signage. North of downtown the corridor connects to the Lake Country Oro-Medonte Rail Trail in the adjacent township, extending the route toward Orillia.

Kempenfelt Bay's 14.5-kilometre length and 41.5-metre depth make it a substantive Lake Simcoe sailing centre. Two yacht clubs operate on the bay — Barrie Yacht Club, with its own grounds and the largest sailing school on Lake Simcoe, and Kempenfelt Bay Yacht Club, based at the Barrie Municipal Marina — and both compete in the Lake Simcoe Interclub Series. The Municipal Marina is the full-service home base; the Bayfield Basin Transient Marina handles short-stay slips downtown; and the Tiffin Boat Launch is the public ramp.

The J.C. Morrison — a side-wheel steamer built in 1854 for the Ontario, Simcoe, and Huron Railway Company — burned and sank in Kempenfelt Bay in August 1857 and now lies in roughly 30 feet of water off Centennial Beach. The wreck is reachable as a shore dive on a 10-minute swim along a guideline from shore, with the intact paddle wheel (about 20 feet in diameter) lying on the port side. Beyond the Morrison, Kempenfelt Bay carries Lake Simcoe's deepest water — 41.5 metres at maximum — making it a focus area for southern Ontario inland diving.

Four lifeguard-staffed beaches line Kempenfelt Bay inside the city: Centennial Beach is the flagship downtown waterfront beach (and seasonally hosts the SPLASH ON inflatable waterpark), Johnson's Beach sits east on the north shore, Tyndale Park & Beach anchors the east end, and Minet's Point Park & Beach faces the open bay. The bay's protected geometry — a long deep arm rather than open Lake Simcoe — gives sheltered swimming water through the warm-weather window.

Kempenfelt Bay holds Lake Simcoe's deepest cold-water habitat — 41.5 metres at maximum — and supports year-round lake trout and whitefish, including walk-in winter access from the Barrie shoreline. The bay sits in Ontario Fisheries Management Zone 16, where the lake trout season is open January 1 to March 15 and from the second Saturday in May to September 30. Daily limit is 2 lake trout on a Sport licence and 1 on a Conservation licence.
