01 — Abstract

Belleville sits on the north shore of the Bay of Quinte at the mouth of the Moira River, the Hastings County seat between Quinte West to the west and Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory to the east. The Bayshore Trail runs the city's Bay of Quinte waterfront from West Zwick's Centennial Park east toward Meyers Pier, where the municipal marina opens to the open Bay of Quinte and onward — east toward Tyendinaga and Kingston, or west across the Bay of Quinte to Trent–Severn Lock 1 in Trenton.

Quinte Conservation manages the H.R. Frink Outdoor Education Centre's 200-hectare cattail marsh and forest north of the city, with Vanderwater Conservation Area on the Moira River further upstream.

The Bay of Quinte itself is one of Canada's recognized walleye fisheries, with Belleville as the north-shore population centre for both the open-water and winter ice fishery. Glanmore National Historic Site, an 1883 Second Empire mansion at the edge of downtown, anchors the heritage core.

A few hours from the GTA on the Toronto–Montreal corridor.

Walking & Strolling

The Bayshore Trail runs along the Bay of Quinte from West Zwick's Centennial Park east toward Meyers Pier, threading the city's Bay of Quinte waterfront ribbon. The Riverside Trail picks up the Moira River corridor through downtown, connecting West Zwick's and Meyers Pier with the Riverside Park stretch upstream. Together with the heritage downtown core anchored by Glanmore NHS, this is among the longer continuous urban-waterfront walks in Eastern Ontario, and most of it is flat and paved.

Nature & Discovery

The H.R. Frink Outdoor Education Centre, Quinte Conservation's roughly 200-hectare property north of Belleville, is the regional birding and environmental-education anchor — boardwalks span cattail marsh, mixed swamp forest, and upland trails, with spring and fall waterfowl migration concentrating on the marsh. Quinte Field Naturalists curate the regional birding inventory, with the Frink Centre, Vanderwater Conservation Area on the Moira upstream, and the Bay of Quinte shoreline along the Bayshore Trail anchoring the local hotspot list.

Cycling

Belleville is a node on the Trans Canada Trail through the Bay of Quinte / Moira corridor, connecting east to Tyendinaga and Napanee and west to Quinte West. The Bayshore Trail provides paved waterfront cycling along the Bay of Quinte, and Highway 62 carries the Bay Bridge / Norris Whitney crossing south to Prince Edward County, where the Loyalist Parkway / Highway 33 runs west across PEC. The Bay of Quinte cycling loop linking Belleville, the Bay Bridge, the Loyalist Parkway, and the Glenora Ferry is one of the more popular Eastern Ontario regional rides.

Sailing & Boating

Meyers Pier is the City of Belleville's municipal marina at the mouth of the Moira River on the Bay of Quinte, with transient and seasonal slips and a public boat launch. From the marina, sailors and powerboats run east on the Bay of Quinte toward Tyendinaga and Kingston or west to Trent–Severn Lock 1 at Trent Port Marina in Trenton — the eastern entry to the 386 km Trent–Severn Waterway. The open Bay of Quinte builds wind chop quickly for small craft.

Freshwater Fishing

The Bay of Quinte is one of Canada's recognized walleye fisheries, and Belleville sits on the north shore as the largest population centre serving the open-water and winter ice fishery. Bay-specific FMZ 20 walleye regulations — including slot limits and Bay-of-Quinte exceptions — codify the fishery's standing. The Belleville waterfront and the inner Bay of Quinte off Meyers Pier carry both summer trolling and winter ice anglers; smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, and muskellunge round out the bay species. Upstream, the Moira River sits in FMZ 18 with smallmouth bass, walleye, and pike in the river reaches above the dam.

Heritage & Culture

Glanmore National Historic Site — an 1883 Second Empire mansion designated a National Historic Site of Canada — anchors the Belleville heritage offer, operated as a municipal museum by the City of Belleville on the edge of downtown. The restored Empire Theatre on Front Street carries the downtown live-music and event calendar in a heritage venue, and Belleville's downtown limestone and brick streetscape forms the broader heritage walking core between the theatre and the waterfront.
