01 — Abstract

Bluewater stretches along the eastern shore of Lake Huron between Goderich and Grand Bend, anchored by the historic harbour village of Bayfield at the mouth of the Bayfield River and by the inland villages of Hensall, Zurich, and Varna. Bayfield's Main Street, Clan Gregor Square, and Elgin Place sit inside a Heritage Conservation District designated in 1982 and updated by Bluewater Council in November 2024 — an intact 19th-century streetscape anchored by Bayfield Town Hall (1882) and the Little Inn (1830s).

Pioneer Park stands on the bluff above Bayfield Pier Beach with stairs down to the sand and a clear southwest view of Lake Huron sunsets. Inland, the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority manages Bannockburn, Clinton, and other conservation areas with short loops along the Bayfield River, and Hensall is the working bean-processing centre for Huron County.

Bayfield Main Street runs four blocks from Clan Gregor Square south past Elgin Place toward the bluff above Lake Huron, threading the 1882 Town Hall, the 1830s Little Inn, and the village shops of the Heritage Conservation District. From Clan Gregor Square, a short walk west drops down to Pioneer Park on the bluff above Bayfield Pier Beach, where stairs descend to the sand and the Bluewater Marina sits at the mouth of the Bayfield River. The 0.7 km River Flats Natural Area trail follows the river through a former mill site with a butterfly meadow and an osprey nesting site.

Bluewater's four named Bayfield beaches share the same Lake Huron sand. Bayfield Pier Beach is the village beach — drive-up access, parking, washrooms, and a life-saving station beside the Bluewater Marina. Howard Street Beach lies south of the pier with stairway access. Pavilion Road Beach (formerly Houston Heights) carries a pavilion, washrooms, playground, and a path to the sand. Hay Township Beach at the end of Sararas Road sits on a bluff with a stair descent and a lookout.

The Bayfield River runs spring rainbow-trout and fall chinook and coho salmon from the lake mouth up through the Clinton Conservation Area pools, with steelhead, brown trout, and smallmouth bass through the season. Heritage & Culture

Bayfield was founded in 1832 by Baron van Tuyll van Serooskerken and named after Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield, the British naval officer who surveyed the Great Lakes. Main Street, Clan Gregor Square, and Elgin Place sit inside a Heritage Conservation District designated in 1982; the updated HCD plan was adopted by Bluewater Council on November 18, 2024 and governs the cluster of 19th-century buildings anchored by Bayfield Town Hall (1882) and the Little Inn (1830s, originally a stagecoach stop). The Bayfield Archives and Heritage Centre on Main Street holds the village's records.
