Fort Erie.

Fort Erie sits at the head of the Niagara River where it leaves Lake Erie, a border town directly across the Peace Bridge from Buffalo, New York. Its outdoor product is built around three corridors: the Niagara River itself (a renowned multi-species fishery and a Globally Important Bird Area for winter gull concentrations), the Lake Erie shoreline through Crystal Beach and Point Abino (sand beach, shallow warming water, the Friendship Trail rail-trail running west to Port Colborne), and the southern terminus of the Niagara Parkway and Niagara River Recreation Trail.
Old Fort Erie National Historic Site, a War of 1812 battlefield managed by the Niagara Parks Commission, anchors the heritage offer. The town is roughly an hour from Hamilton and an hour and a half from Toronto via the QEW.

Hiking
Fort Erie's hiking is shoreline and rail-trail walking, not technical terrain — the town sits on flat lake-plain. The Niagara River Recreation Trail along the Niagara Parkway is the long quiet riverside walk, doable in segments from Old Fort Erie north toward Black Creek. The Friendship Trail rail-trail handles the same role inland and along the Erie corridor. Old Fort Erie's grounds, Mather Park, and Bay Beach add shorter walks that pair well with a heritage or beach visit.

The same corridors that anchor Fort Erie's hiking and cycling — the Niagara River Recreation Trail along the Niagara Parkway and the Friendship Trail rail-trail — work as easy waterfront and rail-trail strolls in segments. Old Fort Erie's parade ground, Mather Park's riverfront, and the Bay Beach promenade in Crystal Beach are the in-town walking options.

The Niagara River corridor — from Lake Erie at Fort Erie north to Lake Ontario at Niagara-on-the-Lake — is a designated Globally Important Bird Area, recognized for exceptionally high gull species diversity in late fall and winter when gulls concentrate on the open river while inland water freezes. Fort Erie's stretch of the corridor (Mather Park, the Niagara Parkway shoreline, the Peace Bridge area) is a productive viewing window. Spring and fall raptor migration uses the same corridor, and Old Fort Erie's grounds and the Friendship Trail add lower-key habitat for general birding through the warmer months.

Fort Erie anchors the eastern end of the Greater Niagara Circle Route, a roughly 140-kilometre signed loop that connects Fort Erie to Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Catharines, Welland, and Port Colborne. Two trails originate in Fort Erie: the Friendship Trail rail-trail, running west around 25 kilometres along the former Buffalo & Lake Huron Railway corridor through Ridgeway to Port Colborne, and the Niagara River Recreation Trail, running north along the Niagara Parkway toward Niagara-on-the-Lake. Both are flat, signed, and family-friendly — paved or hard-packed surface, no significant grade.

Bay Beach in Crystal Beach is the named, Town-operated public beach on Lake Erie — sand shoreline, lifeguards in season, parking and access fees in summer. The Lake Erie north shore here is shallow, which means the water warms earlier than on the deeper Great Lakes; it also means storms develop quickly when the wind comes onshore. Bay Beach is the swimming anchor; smaller township access points along the Erie shoreline supplement it.

The Niagara River through Fort Erie and Lake Erie off Crystal Beach and Point Abino sit inside Fisheries Management Zone 19 — one of the most-fished multi-species water bodies in the Great Lakes. Smallmouth bass, walleye, lake trout, steelhead, and king salmon all run through this corner of the system on different seasonal calendars. The town's public access points include Mather Park's pier on the Niagara River near the Peace Bridge and shoreline pull-offs along the Niagara Parkway; small-craft and charter access expands the offer onto the upper Niagara and Erie. An Ontario fishing licence is required and FMZ 19 seasons and limits apply.

Wildlife viewing in Fort Erie is the same Niagara River IBA substrate that drives the Nature & Discovery card — the river holds gulls, waterfowl, and bald eagles through the open-water winter, and the Niagara Peninsula corridor concentrates spring and fall raptor migration. The Niagara River shoreline through town and the Lake Erie north-shore through Crystal Beach and Point Abino are the two viewing zones.

Old Fort Erie National Historic Site is the regional heritage anchor — a reconstructed War of 1812 fort at the head of the Niagara River, operated by the Niagara Parks Commission, and the site of the Siege of Fort Erie in 1814, one of the bloodiest engagements ever fought on Canadian soil. The Battle of Ridgeway site within Fort Erie commemorates the 1866 Fenian Raids, a separate National Historic designation. The Fort Erie Historical Museum and the Mildred M. Mahoney Silver Jubilee Dolls' House Gallery, both Town-operated, round out the heritage offer.
