Springwater.

Springwater is a rural Simcoe County township wrapping the north and west of Barrie, anchored by the Minesing Wetlands — a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance covering roughly 6,000 hectares of fen, swamp, and marsh on the Nottawasaga River floodplain. East of the wetlands, Copeland Forest Resources Management Area covers 1,800 hectares of multi-use Crown forest on the Oro Moraine, with track-set cross-country trails in winter and a network of forest roads and informal singletrack the rest of the year.
Springwater Provincial Park (193 hectares, day-use only since the 2014 zoo closure) sits near Midhurst, and the Simcoe County Forest tracts at Hendrie and Orr Lake add quieter day-use options. The Ganaraska Trail runs through the township between Barrie and Wasaga Beach, and Snow Valley Ski Resort sits on the moraine inside the township for lift-served alpine.
Most of Springwater is a short drive from downtown Barrie and a few hours from the GTA via the major highway corridor.

Hiking
Copeland Forest Resources Management Area carries 1,800 hectares of multi-use trails on the Oro Moraine northeast of Midhurst, with forest roads and informal singletrack open year-round and track-set in winter. Springwater Provincial Park's 193 hectares near Midhurst hold short day-use loops around the former park lodge area, and the Simcoe County Forest tracts at Hendrie and Orr Lake add quieter walking options in working forest. The Ganaraska Trail's Wasaga–Barrie section threads through the township between the city and the Nottawasaga River corridor.

The Minesing Wetlands cover roughly 6,000 hectares of fen, swamp, and marsh on the Nottawasaga River floodplain — designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1996 and recognised as a Provincially Significant Class 1 wetland. The wetland is also a recognised Important Bird Area, with peak waterfowl staging during spring snowmelt and breeding habitat for least bittern, prothonotary warbler, sedge wren, and sandhill crane. Copeland Forest's mixed-deciduous canopy adds spring forest-bird migration east of the wetlands; Simcoe County Forest tracts at Hendrie and Orr Lake round out the tract roster.

Copeland Forest's 1,800 hectares of forest roads support steady gravel riding on the Oro Moraine, and the Simcoe County Forest tracts at Hendrie and Orr Lake add lower-traffic forest-road options across the township. Springwater also sits on the connector route between Barrie and the Tay Shore / Georgian Bay trail systems for riders moving north toward Penetanguishene and Midland on rural concession roads.
Read field guide arrow_outwardMountain Biking
Copeland Forest's network of informal singletrack and forest roads on the Oro Moraine is the township's mountain-biking centre — drawn from a working Crown forest rather than a purpose-built bike park, with cross-country lines threading the moraine's mixed terrain. The forest sits just inside Springwater's eastern boundary and is reached most easily from the Horseshoe Valley Road / Ingram Road area east of Midhurst.
Read field guide arrow_outwardPaddling — Flatwater
The Nottawasaga River corridor through the Minesing Wetlands is the township's distinctive paddle — a flatwater route through Ramsar-designated wetland with high-water spring access, putting paddlers inside one of southern Ontario's largest wetland complexes. Willow Creek enters the wetland from the southeast and forms a secondary route. Outside the spring window the wetland is mostly inaccessible; the rest of the river through Springwater is sheltered flatwater.

Snow Valley Ski Resort sits on the Oro Moraine inside Springwater Township, with lift-served alpine terrain, a tubing park, and snowshoe routes alongside the resort runs. The hill is a community-scale resort rather than a destination mountain, and the lake-effect snowpack off Georgian Bay typically opens the season earlier than the southern Ontario average.
Read field guide arrow_outwardCross-Country & Nordic
Copeland Forest's track-set and ungroomed cross-country trails on the Oro Moraine carry the township's main Nordic season, with reliable lake-effect snow off Georgian Bay extending the window further than most southern Ontario regions. The Simcoe County Forest tracts at Hendrie and Orr Lake add quiet ungroomed routes; Snow Valley Ski Resort's trail network completes the local Nordic options on the same moraine.
