The brief.
North Shore Reaching Sailing School is a Canadian-owned, ASA- and Transport Canada-certified adult sailing school sailing out of Meyer's Pier in Belleville, Ontario, with access to the Bay of Quinte, Eastern Lake Ontario, and the Thousand Islands. Now in its ninth year of teaching, the school runs day-sail and liveaboard certification courses on Knot on Call, a 2004 Hunter 326 with two private cabins. Head Instructor Captain Andy McCabe is an ASA Instructor Evaluator and US Coast Guard–licensed captain who was named ASA Outstanding Instructor of the Year four years running (2021–2024), a recognition reserved for the top 1% of active ASA instructors worldwide. The sailing season runs June through September.

Intro to Sailing
For: First-time sailors; up to 4 people per bookingWhen: June–SeptemberA half-day introductory course for groups of up to four — friends, family, or a trial run before committing to a full ASA certification. No textbooks, no tests, and students can be as hands-on or as observational as they like. A Certificate of Completion is issued at the end. Qualifies for the operator's 25% discount for first responders and Quinte West / Brighton Chamber of Commerce members.

ASA 101 — Basic Keelboat Sailing
For: Adult beginners; no prerequisitesWhen: June–September, scheduled by availabilityA two-day day-sail course with 12 hours on the water and 4 hours of theory, covering sloop-rigged keelboat handling in light-to-moderate winds: terminology, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, and collision-avoidance rules. The school covers all certification fees and provides the log book; new students also receive a 90-day trial ASA Membership. Textbook *Sailing Made Easy* purchased separately.

ASA 102 — Keelboat Sailing 2
For: Adults with ASA 101 foundationsWhen: June–September, scheduled by availabilityA two-day day-sail course (12 hours on water, 4 hours theory) building from ASA 101 to skippering and crewing a 20–30 ft sloop-rigged keelboat in winds up to 20 knots. Departure, sailing, and return are run as a teamwork drill — students rotate roles and demonstrate control of the boat across a working day on the water.

ASA 103 — Basic Coastal Cruising
For: Adults with ASA 101 prerequisiteWhen: June–September, scheduled by availabilityA two-day day-sail course (14 hours on water, 6 hours theory) covering auxiliary-powered keelboat handling: engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather, and safety. The Bay of Quinte and Eastern Lake Ontario provide the working environment. Textbook *Coastal Cruising Made Easy* purchased separately.

ASA 104 — Bareboat Cruising
For: Adults with ASA 101 and ASA 103 prerequisitesWhen: June–September, scheduled by availabilityA 3 day / 2 night liveaboard course on Knot on Call covering multiday cruising in moderate-to-heavy winds: provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring and mooring, docking, and emergency operations. Provisioning costs are divided evenly among students and instructor.

ASA 101 / 103 / 104 Liveaboard Bundle
For: Adults pursuing the full cruising-certification stack in one weekWhen: June–September, scheduled by availabilityA weeklong liveaboard bundle compressing the three foundational ASA certifications — Basic Keelboat, Basic Coastal Cruising, and Bareboat Cruising — into a single immersive course on Knot on Call. Priced below the sum of the individual courses ($2,675 if booked separately). Provisioning and textbooks are extra; provisioning is split evenly across students and instructor.

ASA 105 — Coastal Navigation
For: Adults; can be taken in class only or combined with other ASA coursesWhen: Scheduled by availabilityA 6–8 hour one-day in-class course on the navigational theory and practices required for safe coastal and inland sailing. On-water application is layered into ASA 103, 104, and 106; ASA 105 supplies the chartwork foundation. Students need parallel rulers, dividers, and the Pyzel *Coastal Navigation Advanced Cruising Techniques* manual plus training chart. Self-study required.

Sea Time & Skills
For: Sailors of any level wanting more sea time without examsWhen: June–September; half-day, full-day, or multi-day formatsA no-exam course for accruing logged sea time and refining specific skills — safety procedures, vessel handling, sail trim, collision regulations, or whatever the student wants to work on. All on-water time is recorded and verified in the student's personal sailing log. Format and emphasis are tailored to the student; pricing tracks duration and difficulty.

Sailing Lessons (your boat or ours)
For: Sailors wanting non-certification skill improvementWhen: June–SeptemberHourly, customised lessons run on the school's boat or on the student's own boat. Useful for fine-tuning specific skills or preparing for charter holidays without enrolling in a full ASA certification. Lessons are tailored to the student's requirements and schedule.
$85 CAD per hour, $255 minimum, plus HST (plus travel if more than 25 km from the instructor's location)

ASA 106 — Advanced Coastal Cruising
For: Experienced sailors with ASA 101, 103, 104, and 105 prerequisitesWhen: June–September, scheduled by availabilityA 5 day / 4 night liveaboard on a sailing vessel of approximately 30–50 ft, covering longer voyages on coastal and inland waters in any conditions, including night sailing. Builds on all four prior certifications and is the school's most advanced cruising course. Textbook *Advanced Cruising & Seamanship* required.
