The Prep
Algonquin Outfitters backs right onto the Muskoka River at Town Dock (86 Main St E). They rent canoes, kayaks, and SUPs with no reservation needed - staff help you into the water and point you in the right direction. Upstream leads to Hunter's Bay, where you can stop at Avery Beach for a swim, then continue to Lake Vernon. Downstream, you paddle under the historic Swing Bridge and onto Fairy Lake. The Big East River is quieter - a sandy-bottom waterway that winds through forest, best for spotting wildlife. The Lower Oxtongue (7 km from Dwight Beach to Marsh's Falls) has great blue herons, turtles, and river otters along the banks. For multi-day backcountry trips, Algonquin Park's interior canoe routes start 45 minutes north.
"Check AER conditions before you head out. Air quality and weather can shift quickly — especially during wildfire season and summer smog events."
