Victoria Park
Kitchener's oldest park (opened 27 August 1896) with a lake of three islands fed by Schneider Creek, the clock tower from the former city hall, and the 1911 Queen Victoria statue. Anchors the south end of the Iron Horse Trail.
Victoria Park's lake holds three islands fed by Schneider Creek, with the clock tower from the former city hall standing on the south side and the 1911 Queen Victoria statue near the lake. The park opened on 27 August 1896 and remains Kitchener's oldest. The Iron Horse Trail leaves the park's south edge as a paved, snow-cleared rail trail and runs straight through downtown into uptown Waterloo.
Dress warmly; hydration a must; watch for icy patches
This is the rare Ontario city where the central walking spine stays open in February. The Iron Horse Trail is asphalt the full 5.5 km from Victoria Park to Erb Street West in Waterloo and is kept clear of snow year-round; the 2.4 km Spurline Trail extends the connection on a second former rail corridor. Both trails are flat, lit at intersections, and accessible without a fee or permit. Kiwanis Park sits on the Grand River with a leash-free dog park and beach volleyball; McLennan Park's paved loops circle a 39-hectare reclaimed landfill on the south side. Best walking weather is April through October, but the rail trails work year-round.
