The Prep

Tobermory's waters sit where Lake Huron meets Georgian Bay, creating a deep, cold-water fishery with strong populations of lake trout, Chinook salmon, and whitefish. The deep water (60+ metres in Fathom Five) supports a year-round lake trout fishery that's among the best in Ontario. Smallmouth bass and northern pike are found in the shallower bays and around the islands. Most serious fishing requires boat access - charter operators run half-day and full-day trips from Little Tub Harbour. Shore fishing is limited but possible from the harbour walls and at some access points on the Lake Huron side.

AER Tip

"Check AER conditions before you head out. Air quality and weather can shift quickly — especially during wildfire season and summer smog events."

Must Haves

  • Valid Ontario Outdoors Card + sport fishing licence (available online at ontario.ca)
  • Warm layers - even in summer, the water keeps temperatures cool on the boat
  • Polarized sunglasses (the clear water makes sight-fishing possible in shallow areas)

Pro Tips

  • Charter boats provide all tackle - book through operators at Little Tub Harbour
  • Seasickness medication if trolling offshore - Georgian Bay can be rough
  • The lake trout fishery is strongest in spring (May-June) and fall (September-October)
